History of PSD

A glance back on our most important past projects

Read more about how we gained the expertise necessary to construct and install these complicatet Platform Door Systems. Here you will find the most important milestones of our journey in the world of PSD.

1991-1993: Toulouse, Line A

As the first metro line for this major French city, it has been a real life-changer for all inhabitants of Toulouse. Line A of Toulouse metro, initially 10km long and including 15 stations, started operation on 26th of June 1993. Gilgen Door Systems delivered its first PSD system which consists of 180 automatic doorways and a total length across all stations of more than 1000m of Platform Screen Doors and contributed to the success of this new metro line. Toulouse Line A has then been extended later with extra 3 stations in 2003 which Gilgen equipped with PSDs.

1998-2003: New York, JFK airport
1998-2003: New York, JFK airport

AirTrain JFK airport link allows connection from MTA New York city metro network to John Fitzgerald Kennedy airport. This fully automated metro is 13 km long and consists of 3 lines and 9 stations in operation (10 stations were initially open to public).  Gilgen Door Systems established its PSD presence in North America by supplying Platform Screen Doors core components (OEM) for all initial 10 stations for a total of 160 doorways which have proven their reliability on this metro system running 24/7.

2000-2007: Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Island Lines

In the late 90’s, MTR, Honk Kong network operator, decided to deploy Platform Screen Doors on its busiest metro lines Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan and Island Lines, also called “Urban lines” as part of the first worldwide PSD “retrofit” project. The main challenge was to install the Platform Screen Doors during non-operation hours (at night) to allow continuity of service for Honk Kong inhabitants.

Gilgen successfully installed circa 3000 doorways within more than 13km of Platform Screen Doors within 7 years. Still to date, this project is among the biggest PSD projects conducted ever and it has been the starting point of a more than 20 years partnership between MTR and Gilgen Door Systems with additional projects later and maintenance contracts on all PSD systems installed by Gilgen.

2003-2007: Kaohsiung, Red and Orange Lines
2003-2007: Kaohsiung, Red and Orange Lines

The Red and Orange lines are the only 2 metro lines of Kaohsiung city in Taiwan currently in operation. Respectively composed by 24 and 14 stations, they form part of a dense public transport network in one of the main cities of Taiwan. For its first project in Taiwan, Gilgen Door Systems supplied core components (OEM) for more than 670 doorways that have been installed within more than 7km of Platform Screen Doors.

2005-2006: Red and Blue Lines, Taipei, Taiwan

The Red and Blue lines are part of the busy network of Taipei, first metro network built in Taiwan.

Strong of its successful experience in Hong Kong, Gilgen Door Systems provided PSD half height doors core components (OEM) for this retrofit project for nearly 150 doorways.

2005-2006: Shanghai, Line 9
2005-2006: Shanghai, Line 9

Shanghai Line 9 forms part of the busy and rapidly growing Shanghai metro network and opened in 2007. For its first project in China, Gilgen Door Systems provided PSD half height doors core components (OEM) for this retrofit project for 600 doorways. Thanks to this success, Gilgen Door Systems then supplied its high-quality core components for more than 1 thousand doorways in total on various other projects in China (in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou).

2007-2013: Paris, Line 1 and 13

Line 1 is the first metro line in Paris from West to East and the busiest one, it started operation in 1900 and was further extended afterwards. Line 13 is a North-South line which is also very busy since it was extended further than Paris city limits. RATP, the Paris metro operator, decided to improve the performances of these 2 lines: line 1 would be converted to a full automated metro system and line 13 would need investment to reliability and quality of service. RATP decided to equip both lines with half height Platform Screen Doors, line 1 in all stations because of the driverless mode and line 13 on the main critical stations. After a concours, RATP chose Gilgen Door Systems half height “Bijou®” PSD for this project related to the quality of its design and the extensive experience of Gilgen to retrofit metro lines that must remain in operation during daytime.

Overall, Gilgen Door Systems provided PSD half height systems in all 25 stations of Line 1 and 13 stations of line 13 for more than circa 1400 doorways within circa 7km of façade in total.

2010-2016: West Island, South Island and Kwun Tong Extension Lines, Hong Kong
2010-2016: West Island, South Island and Kwun Tong Extension Lines, Hong Kong

West Island Line (WIL), South Island Line (SIL) and Kwun Tong Extension (KTE) are parts of expansion projects of the MTR public transport network in Hong Kong. MTR confirmed its trust in Gilgen Door Systems product and capacities to deliver retrofit projects.

Gilgen Door Systems successfully delivered both full-height and half-height types of Platform Screen Doors in 10 stations for a total of more than 500 doorways within circa 2.5km of PSD.

2013-2017: Sha Tin to Central Link, Ma On Shan Line

Line 1 is the first metro line in Paris from West to East and the busiest one, it started operation in 1900 and was further extended afterwards. Line 13 is a North-South line which is also very busy since it was extended further than Paris city limits. RATP, the Paris metro operator, decided to improve the performances of these 2 lines: line 1 would be converted to a full automated metro system and line 13 would need investment to reliability and quality of service. Overall, Gilgen Door Systems provided PSD half height systems in all 25 stations of Line 1 and 13 stations of line 13 for more than circa 1400 doorways within circa 7km of façade in total.

2016-2021: City Line, Stockholm, Sweden
2016-2021: City Line, Stockholm, Sweden

The City Line has been designed to significantly improve the commute of Stockholm inhabitants with the addition of an underground section to increase Stockholm railway network capacity with 2 new stations in Stockholm hyper centre. Commuter, regional and intercity lines use this new tunnel with more “heavy” trains compared as classic metro type trains. The Platform Screen Doors have been adapted with larger doors and the overall length of a platform is circa 250m. Gilgen Door Systems equipped 6 platforms within 2 stations with full-height PSD for a total of 168 doorways within 1.5km of PSD.

2016-2019: Line B, Rennes, France

Line B is the second metro line for this major French city and offers a south-west to north-east route across Rennes city, in complete complementarity with Line A that offers a north-west to south-east route. Line B of Rennes metro is 13km long and includes 15 stations and started operation on 20th of September 2022. Gilgen Door Systems equipped all 15 stations with full-height PSD for a total of 180 doorways within 1km of PSD.
