Non-smoking is obligatory. Lane change gates ensure aerodynamic separation of the two tunnel tubes. In an emergency, this ensures that smoke is prevented from entering the opposite tunnel tube and that even overpressure ventilation can be generated in the opposite tube.

At the same time, uniform positive pressure ventilation is generated in the opposite tube to improve air quality and enable safe evacuation.
